@Aye Bee Sorry! The response in my mail just had that you had a water trap. You're correct, if you heat the valve stem after adding air below 0 you'll be fine. I think it's important to let people know that though. Don't just tell them "hey your tires low better fill it up" at below 0
@Aye Bee that water trap won't help/work. On a nice hot summer day take the valve stem out of a tire that's full of air and see what happens. Frost will form and sometimes frost will "spit" out. The same thing happens when you fill the tire but that frost happens below the valve seat so it can be slightly colder than freezing (32) and you'll still be fine. Once you get below 0 your gambling. 20 below and now you're really stretching your luck. I highly respect Scotty with his mechanical advice but I guarantee I have more experience with tires

I looked under the hood of a late 70's Volvo diesel. Enough room to fix ANYTHING. Double layer steel, unitized construction for A1 safety rating at the time.
@Ross Mr. Ross, thank you for the reminder. Old Hot Rod mag article on how to read spark plugs for unleaded fuel. Dodge 3.3 and 3.8 Vees have rev limited in park @4,000rpm. Maybe 5000rpm not so good for turbo. I agree with you on oil consumption durability. It's these dang transverse mounted one piece rear main POS's. Nugents song: A thousand knives. So many finger and hand slicing in vehicles assembled from below. I really hope some of the autocad clowns get to experience a road side failure of their own designs. Hey engineers! Give us three more inches all around, in your dang unitized crush zones!
I only use Aunt Jemima in my car.
wow, I forgot about oil being in cans . don't think I got a piercing spout anymore either
it's 2021, people aren't dumb enough to run cars in an enclosed garage!
Scotty on the impala that would drive for an hour and then wouldn't restart. What about the camshaft position sensor. T My 2004nsl500 90k miles did the same thing. Would just die while driving and it was the camshaft position sensor. Thanks for the useful tips. Christopher
Scotty could easily work up a sweat standing out there in nothing but a t-shirt and shorts.
Has Scotty said anything about the oil filter brand?
You should do a special on the difference between full synthetic vs 100 synthetic oil.
What ever happen to graphite oil. I liked it ,it showed all my leaks on my engine. The main reason is after the engine is shut down. The graphite is still between the bearing and the other working surface. Graphite is lubricating before you get oil pressures. I first used 100% graphite oil , but l think 1 or 2 cans of graphite in 5 cans should be enough.
Fwd cars are better in snow because there's more weight put into the front tires from the engine compartment.
I miss my first car, which had rear wheel drive, in winter (here in Bavaria, 35 years ago, when we still had REAL winters)! I went out at night and drove through the snowy roads, training how to go in right angles through the bends by deliberately making the rear come. You can save the situation with an RWD that way when you go too fast into a curve, with an FWD when you are too fast, it's over, you go straight. As you combine propulsion/braking and steering on one wheel, and have only one amount of friction, when you overdo it, only one remains. In any case, you have to be careful in the snow, RWD or FWD. When I start, I always test the conditions, accelerating until the traction control kicks in, braking until ABS kicks in, to know where I am. One more hint, embarassingly a woman told me that: When it is so slippery that you cannot get out of your sloping garage entrance as you lose grip with your FWD, go out backwards, there is more load on the lower axle.
Keep up the good work Scotty.
This has got to be at least the second time that I have subscribed to Scotty's channel 😂. I wonder how many of us are dual subscription's.
So what kind of motor oil are we supposed to stop using right now??
there was cold weather when you were a teenager!? wow! history is fascinating
Hey Scotty what do you think about a 2006 Toyota tundra v6 sr5 117,000 MI bought it one year old for 19,000 and still were half that and no issues, I really want to buy a new truck but I don't see the need to I know what you're going to say drive it.. but what if I want something new what do I do?
Scotty , its cold enough in Texas to freeze the balls off a brass monkey
Thanks Scotty lots of talk and every word means something. Thank You
Don't leave beer in the car overnight during cold weather. Slushy beer is almost impossible to drink.
Another great video by Scotty.
Rev up your engine vroom vroom get out me car
As far as the Impala its probably the module underneath the coil pack...when they get hot they shut down and the ignition stops working when they cool off they will crank and run again.. or the crank sensor on the back side of the engine on firewall side..there's a crank sensor..when it starts to go it will cause that same thing....been there done that....many times... oh and by the way on the driver side on the front of the transmission there's a ground wire bolted to the transmission that will corrode and the wire will break.. that will cause issues as well..check that wire make sure it's got good connection
Frozen windshield wiper fluid can wreck your wiper fluid pump. A lot of people in Chicago found this out back in the 80s we had an extreme cold spell -30f I think. Use the purple stuff if it's gonna be lower than -20f.
Tennessee LOL that's where am buying a house next spring... It's weirdly strange that state keeps being brought up.
Scotty how long can a car set without driving before the battery dies?
Just do what I did and move to South Florida!
So you dont live in texas any more
'this type of engine oil' ... means what ? I went thru the vid and do not see an answer...
So true.
AWD is nice, but when I lived in the SW Rocky Mtns, I preferred driving my GF's FWD Nissan Sentra with studded snow tires. More stable on black ice patches and would pull you through 6-8" of fresh snow. At the time, I was working at the airport and was going into work before the snowplows had gotten to the secondary roads (They plow the primary i.e. highways before the access roads). I would drive up the road to the mesa that Telluride Airport was on way before sunrise to open the airport and plow the runway. I had a FJ40 that I would drive if we got really heavy snow, but that Sentra road the ice much better.
FWD is fine if the snow isn't too deep (maybe put some sandbags in the back/truck or behind the front seats). I have a front wheel drive vehicle and so far (even in the midwest with the snow we just had, it was fine. The only time I got stuck was going out of my driveway because the plows plowed in the end of the driveway, but as far as traction, not really much different than my truck which had 4WD, and really, last year, I only used 4WD twice then it was 2WD the rest of the time (but i put weight in the bed of the truck to help get traction). But with my Camry, haven't had any issues other than with the driveway, and that was solved by shoveling the end of the drive way. I mean you do have to be careful because you can slip more than an AWD vehicle, but FWD is better than just RWD. AWD is a nice compromise. But if you must drive in deep and/.or wet snow, AWD or 4WD might be helpful.
I wouldn't even run your car for very long in the garage even with the garage door open. I would back your car out a little if you can so at least the rear end (tail pipe) is outside the garage, or if you can, just back out completely and close your garage door. Even letting my car warm up, I only let it run for maybe 1 minute in the garage (with the garage door open), because even with the door open, you can smell fumes going back into the garage, and if its windy out, that can make things worse. I would just back the car out of the garage, close the door, and sit in your car while it's running, outside. For winter driving, I leave about 2-3 psi out of the tire (so mine are rated at 35 PSI, I only fill them to about 32 PSI). This gives you a bit more traction in the snow. Just remember when it warms up or there isn't snow on the ground to fill them back up to the proper level, because if you forget and you start driving in hot weather, that can cause problems too, but letting a little air out (or not filling them up to spec) can help with traction because more of the tire is making contact with the road. But I'd only do this as a temporary measure while there is actaully snow on the road, and don't run them too low (probably no more than 5 psi lower than rated--and go by the stick on the door, not the tire).
im laughing at you thinking a 2.0 is a small engine its not really i know you lot are all bout your v8's but a 2.0 isnt a big engine its not small either. here you can get engines from half a litre in cars! average engine size for a large family car is 2.0
A bad fuel pump relay will also cause a running car to shut off after you come to a stop. Happened on my 79 VW Rabbit on a road trip from Pa to Tx. The Rabbit would start and run normally. As soon as we would get off the interstate it would shut off. It would not start up again unless we waited about 15 - 20 minutes. After that it would start up and run normally again. Pull off the Interstate and it would shut off once again. The battery and alternator tested good. Found out if was a bad fuel pump relay.
Bangor, ME visited this place in December 30 years ago & disliked the below zero cold so much I have never gone back.
Thanks Scotty all your information is so valuable. Thank you for always helping us out
Everyone: panic in the snow Scotty: Cross country Ski in the snow
Hey Who Let the Dog out at 3:33?
dont forget about keeping the radiator clear of snow and ice
But for high mile cars isn’t thin oil easily getting into the chamber and damaging the CAT?
Scotty never stated which oil to avoid!🤣 I've been running Mobil 1 5-30 Full Synthetic (now Advanced) for over 25 years with outstanding results. While it's best to start with the very 1st oil change (most OEM's use synthetic for break-in), like when buying used, it's never too late. That is, if there's no knocking from engine & using a lot between changes.🤣 Remember, it's never a good idea to revert to regular oil once starting to run synthetic, or so many mechanics says. The more folks who runs synthetic, the many new rides that'll go 350,000-500,000 miles.👍
you forogt the issue of people with alot of short start and shut off causing alot of moisture in the oil it can crystalize and often does at the oil pan sump pickup as the oil is warm it seperates and the moisture moves towards the bottom of the oil pan and then crystalizes at the pickup this can cause alot of issues and can plug the oil pickup screen this is why synthetics are heavily advised for cold climates as the synthetics also have a tendency of keeping the moisture dispersed thru the oil so it wont accumulate towards bottom of motor to cause this problem.
S
I use AMSOIL, the only 100% synthetic oil available in America. It also flows in colder temperatures better than any oil.
I don't care from sunny L.A. CA
Scotty don't you miss living where you are able to get frostbite and a heatstroke all within the week?
That woman did it in her garage all shut in with her kids .... how could she not know .... Freezing weather doesn’t kill by freezing people they die from CO poisoning , instead of trying to heat yourself using a hair brained scheme , just wrap up in blankets and clothes ! It works!
traction increases with lower air pressure
Did anyone notice his "thick oil" was lucas (an oil thickener additive) and his "thin oil" was 2 stroke oil (already thin like water) ? Just wondering ? Hahaha
Just build a small fire under the oil pan.
One BIG problem with front wheel drive and 4 wheel drive, on ice or other low traction situations these vehicles will cause loss of steering. I know one guy put his Jeep through the front window of Hardee's because he hit ice with it in 4 wheel drive mode and another guy has serious accident when this front wheels spun on ice, losing steering and cruising the center line into on coming traffic. Real things to think about. Rear wheel drive will not have this problem. Of course if you lose traction on the rear wheels you better be ready to steer into the slide. Best to go practice in an ice or snow covered vacant parking lot. Break the traction and learn how to control the car in adverse traction conditions.
5:38 lol
Hey Scotty, I was taught that most materials expand when heated and contract when cold, with the exception of water and rubber, which does the opposite. However, the air inside the tire will contract when cooled.
What an anti-american. I bet he voted for china joe
The Florida pool pump motor repair guy approved ! that was good info
Leaking exhaust gases into the cabin can definitely kill. I like the point into the wind advice. Scotty, you always have some gems of knowledge worth listening to.
Scotty why do you hold up a can of Mobil 1 oil and say this engine will destroy your car I have seen Mobiloil tested against many good oils and it stands to test what are talkin about
Very good videos! Man is knowledgeable and funny.
If you take the vaccine, you'll be full of synthetic fluids. 😎
BMW drivers should put on their brown pants in heavy snow.
Where I used to live, we need to run the air conditioner all night if we wanted to sleep in the car because of the heat and high humidity.
Most people don’t even know these kind of tips. Good to know.
So what oil are we not supposed to use
I'm in Texas, I'm good.
Thanks for hollering at us,I signed up!
I wonder how Elon is doing in texas with his electric cars 🤣
Are you in Tennessee or in Texas?
I’m gonna bring back his old school intro with the burnout. 😁
Most of this yelling in the camera advice is mechanics 101, low level information that is just really common sense! Nothing to learn here.
Scotty, I'm sure glad you are still on YOU TUBE, I learn a whole bunch from your videos.
Hydrophilic Scotty not hydroscopic. Otherwise good info.
I'm using Vavoline synthetic blend. It's $17.00 at Walmart. Change it every 6 months since I'm retired and don't drive much. The 04 Chevy truck has 150,000 miles and still runs like a top.
Me with a 2011 impala only using mobile 1 oil you scared me for a second 🤣
👍👍👍👍👍👌🤙💪🙏
Scotty I have a 2017 Traverse the auto start stop working and the engine light has come on when I disconnect the negative on my battery and put it back its all right for weeks then the same thing happens again what do you recommend for me to do?
What are your thoughts on the relatively new GM 3.0 diesel engine?
Hi Scotty - another great video, thanks from London, England! When you mention warming up a car in a garage you said be wary of poisonous gases (carbon monoxide) but this would only be applicable to older vehicles as most now have catalytic convertors.
Hey Scotty, Alex on Autos lost my subscription a week or so ago when he disrespected your views on car companies quality. I only point this out because I appluad you never tearing anyone else down to get a point across.
Good info Scotty 👍
Scotty it never gets cold there. Try Michigan. Hope all is good
stop breathing THIS kind of air RIGHT NOW!
Damn my country is so hot we need the coolant to be super long life and a radiator fan as big as texas to keep the engine cool.
Hey Scotty what's your opinion on Kendall 5w-30w Full Synthetic?..
Those Impalas are super garbage! Especially those plastic elbows of the cooling system that crack, explode, break off and disappear! Then have to be replaced with metal ones. Should have been metal ones there in the first place!
And make sure you have plenty of kitty litter if you get stuck
I got scared near the end. I thought he was gonna blow up. :)
Always use dexos 1 in your modern car to keep that timing chain and engine lasting a long time.
Scotty please don’t show you’re plates, also get new ones if you’re at you’re new home they won’t mess with you as much there
Well, that was a waste of time. Glad I skipped through: nothing interesting here.
Why do you say "Stop Using This Type of Engine Oil Right Now" with a picture of Mobil 1?
@0:50--"When it freezes, most things Shrink" Umm, like what, for instance? Give us an example of Major Shrinkage when "it' gets cold.
Got an 02 subaru outback bought it with way low compression,2 weeks ago $650 Already have a jdm engine on a pallet in my shed. Give me any reason you can find to not repower this car... It's not rusted out, live in Wisconsin 271,*** miles and I drive a thousand miles a week. This is my fifth subaru. Put a brand new set of hankook I pikes on a day after I got it
I bought an old "project" F150. It is red, my wife wanted a red pickup ... No comments please. I have put new tires on it, repaired the exhaust, and am making a list, checking it twice. I got 4 new snow grip tires, a week later, every drop of snow in the arctic land on our front lawn. I had bought the last of those tires before the snow hit. There are more things left to do, but the truck is a project I will finish. it would have been better to buy a different truck, but she wanted a red truck.
I run nothing but straight 30 weight Quaker state non detergent made in the 60’s I’ve got 15 barrels 55 gallon I got at a deal, will last forever
I had an older airplane, the engine has both the oil warning lite and a pressure gauge, the warning lite sender was right by the oil pump (earl pump for texans) while the pressure gauge took off the far end of the system. I those days airplanes didn't use multivis oil rather 50 wt for summer and 30 for winter. With winter temps in the high 20s, if you could get the thang to start, the lite would go out almost immediately but it would take a minute or more to show pressure on the gauge. When Aeroshell came out I switched to it (a multigrade) pressure came up almost immediately, thank you shell. The plane had an alternative for really cold days (think N. Dakota) there was a switch on the panel that operated a little electric pump that would pump gaz into your oil, about a quart, this would thin it down enough to get going (there was 12 qts in the sump), not as bad as you'd think since airplane engines reach operating temp very quickly during takeoff due to 100% power (some only allow that for five minutes due to heat) and all that gaz will boil off lickety split. Of course the lead that was in the gas in now in the oil and avgaz had a LOT of lead in it in those days, nowadeys 100 octane was only a wee bit of lead. Nobody has figured out how to make 100 octane without lead. Airplanes generally change oil every 25 to 50 hours.
We just went through -•27 wc here in oklahoma was a nightmare!
Loved the cutaway drawing of the MG 1100
Your so right... I drive an 06 Toyota Corolla in New Brunswick, Canada with just All Seasons. Never drove with winter tires.
good advice Scottie...
Scotty makes me laugh...thanks I needed that chuckle....lol
